The End of the Road

Our vacation to Minnesota was an amazing success. Despite nearly 60 hours of drive-time, the boys were champs. No fighting, no bickering. They read, they listened to audiobooks, they made movies, they drew pictures. They got to visit with three sets of grandparents, and three sets of aunts & uncles and one pair of goats.

I wish we would have had a bit more time at each stop. An overnight for each family visit would have been nice. Stuff to know for next time. I will also save more money for next time. The last few days on the road blew our budget out of the water with the desperate need for snacks and caffeine *and* eating in restaurants instead of picnicking at rest stops.

I didn’t take nearly enough pictures. I totally forgot to get my camera out in Ohio. I don’t know what I was thinking. But I can share a few pics with you, and you can click through to the flickr set to see the rest.

Every morning this was the sun-dappled view out the window of our cabin. The path you see leads down to the dock and the boats.

And the boys suited up (twice a day most sunny days) to go fishing. (That is *my* OCC hat – I used to love that show!)

Once they were out on the lake, I couldn’t even see them with binoculars. They were gone – I guess the lake goes on forever and then some.

While the boys fished, I stayed in the cabin and baked cookies and spent some quality time swatching for new designs, while my boyfriend Brendan Fraser read Inkspell to me by the crackling fire.

And every evening ended with cribbage and other card games, a home-cooked meal for the weary fisherman (by me), and a little bit more knitting. (Note the benadryl gel on the table – the mosquitoes were vicious!) And yes, we burned a fire nearly every day. We’re from Florida and it barely broke 60 while we were up there – I was freezing!

All in all, with family, friends and some much needed time away from the world it was easily the best vacation ever. And we can’t wait to do it again.

Back again, back again, jiggity jog…

Oh my. I am tired. But it was the best vacation ever. I didn’t take nearly enough pictures. But the boys got to see three sets of grandparents and the man and I got to escape from the world for a good long time.

I’ll post a more detailed recap later – when I finish the laundry.

Good stuff

Well yesterday was a little tough. My mind kept racing and I didn’t get to sleep til well after 3am. Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m an early to bed, early to rise kind of gal. Normally I’m sawing logs by 11pm and up no later than 6:30am. But not last night. I got up at 8:30am and started to get ready for my first day of work.

Would you like to know how my day went?

Of course you would. Otherwise you wouldn’t be here.

Well ok, if you insist, I will tell you.

It. Was. Awesome.

So awesome. The woman I was working with was crazy nice. The shop owner asked my opinion about stuff. I got to help people with their knitting. It was soooo cool. I’m tired, mainly because A. I didn’t sleep much last night and B. I’m spoiled rotten and don’t have to work 8 whole hours like ever anymore. But it really was a fabulous day. And for the cherry on top my beginning knitting class is totally full for Saturday! Yay me!

In other news we hit the Cummer Museum again last night and met up with some friends. Here are some pictures of the monsters in the gardens. (The stone kind and the ones that belong to me!)

Tell them.

You always hurt the ones you love. You know the old adages. When’s the last time you kissed your kids good night? When’s the last time you told your spouse that you love them? That you really appreciate them? When’s the last time you did something nice for a friend just because?

Well go do it.

Yes, now.

I’ll wait.

Of course I’m telling you this because someone died. I won’t lie and say that it was someone I was super close to, because it wasn’t. Never was actually. We went to school together. He was funny and easily had one of the best smiles ever. Ever I tell you. Nowadays with all the networking stuff we were facebook friends of course. He had really adorable little boys and a lovely wife and I found his work in green energy kind of fascinating. And he’s gone. Just like that.  And there is a very large group of his family and friends who have a hole that will never heal. But I think it’s the wife and kids that gets me the most.

What if you were gone tomorrow? What if they were? Did you tell them everything you needed to? Did you hug and kiss them until they squirmed to get away from you?

Tell them.

Sunday Dad-day

So I spent a few hard-working hours cleaning and reorganizing the office/yarn room. Found lots of yarn that I forgot I had. So now I have a nice long list of design ideas for said yarn. It also gave me some closure on some things. Sometimes it’s very, very good to just be able to move on, guilt-free and do what you want.

It’s been a good father’s day. This post was originally titled Sunday Dye-day, but the plans changed. We had a leisurely breakfast of bagels, leftover pizza for lunch, and the boys had headed over to the pool around 4:45 as I was gearing up to start dinner. I had dyed the first batch of the day and was looking forward to a peaceful evening at home.

When suddenly no more than two minutes after they left, they arrived right back home. Seems the pool decided to close early today. And boys who think they are going swimming were looking mighty disappointed – including the big man. So we moved to plan B – B for beach. I threw on my suit, some board shorts and a sundress overtop and we were off!

It was so danged hot today – I think it easily topped 100 *before* the heat index. But once we got to the beach, it was quite a bit cooler of course. We played and swimmed and had the best afternoon. The waves were super gentle and the water was pretty warm. Perfect.

After the beach we hit Cruisers for burgers (for the men), a nummy half-a-big salad for me, and some of their delicious fries with ranch dressing. Again with the perfect. No more dyeing got done today, but it was worth it. Speaking of dyeing, here’s what I’m working on now in some of my hand-dyed yarn. It’s the semi-precious silk/merino blend in amethyst, and the pattern is one of my own creation. The stitch pattern is a modification of something from the Walker books (naturally) and I’m really in love with it.

amethyst-sock

But whatever shall I call it? It needs a name, this lovely sock. And so we be having a contest. (We being me, myself, and I.) I need a name. Presumably you think the sock is pretty. You give me a name that I think is just perfect. I give you a free copy of this sock pattern (when it’s finished) and any other two patterns in my catalog. The contest will be open until Friday. Oh and I’ll help you out a little bit. I don’t like names that have colors in them. Chances are most people who make this sock won’t make it in the exact same yarn, so I like to give color-neutral names. Please give your suggestions/entries in the comments. Have at it!

I wonder as I wander…

So I’ve been having some sort of crossroads thing going on. Wondering if I should focus on dyeing or designing or do both or what. Well after a solid week of introspection the answer is that I have no freaking idea. I decided to give up the dyeing for a short while and ended up ordering more base yarn and fiber. But there is a wait time for that of course, so then I think that I will focus on some designing.

And I just have to say that the whole process is just giving me gas. I feel like I’m missing some crucial step in the process. That there is some unspoken secret about how all of this works that everyone knows but me. I took the time to set up a calendar for all of the knitting deadlines (print and online) so that I could keep on top of these things. Today I realized that I have missed two deadlines. One of which if it was ready could have been e-mailed today, but the other of which I noted as due today but that required being mailed. Um, yeah. Apparently I’m a dunderhead.

I have a really lovely sock pattern in the works. And I think I should get some test knitters and get it moving. But then I think that maybe I should keep it a secret and I could submit it somewheres. Yeah. Too much thinking. Especially for as tired as I am.

Yesterday we went to Wild Adventures up in Valdosta, Georgia. Now don’t get me wrong, it was hot, but it wasn’t really all that bad. Plus they have a waterpark attached to the amusement park. So we were able to easily cool off. Plus there was like no one there. The longest we waited for any attraction was for the current riders to exit. No lines anywhere at all. We listened to our new Chickenfoot CD on the way up and the boys were suitably excited…

And his big brother did weird things with chewing gum. “Look Mom, it’s George Washing-thumb!”

They had a magic show and big dude got chosen as the magician’s assistant.

All in all it was a fabulous day. And if I had spent today sleeping it off (as I wish I could have) instead of working the VBS craft room all bright and early I wouldn’t be so freaking tired. But it was worth it!

3-of-a-kind

I’m sensing a trend here…

So it was a rather unremarkable Wednesday. The man was off work, and he and the boys were in the back doing yardwork. Something with ratchet straps and the clubhouse and I really just try to stay out of these things and make sure they have enough water to drink. Anyhow, I thought I would be a good Betty Homemaker. So I pulled out my shortbread pan, and mixed up some oatmeal shortbread.

It’s the simplest recipe ever. 1 cup flour, 3 tbsp. sugar, 1 stick of butter. Mix flour and sugar, and cut in butter. Add 1/3 cup rolled oats. Bake at 325 for 20-25 minutes. The edges should be a nice golden brown. Immediately after removing it from the oven, spread one cup of butterscotch chips over the top. As they melt, smooth them out. Let cool and then enjoy. Shortbread is love, right?

Let me tell you about this shortbread pan. For like three years I admired it at the Scottish Festival. But it was pricey to me, and I couldn’t justify it. But finally the man said (well shouted actually) “Just buy it!!!” He argued that I made shortbread regularly, it would make me happy, all that rot. He was right. So I finally bought it.

shortbread-pan

Being the happy domestic diva that I was yesterday, I was getting ready to run up to the store. It was nearly lunchtime and Publix had fresh pineapple on sale. And the boys love nothing more than fresh pineapple. So I went to check on the yardworkers, and the man asked if I could make some iced tea.

This is when things got dicey.

I figured I should make the tea before I went to the store, so it would have time to cool. So I filled a pan with water, turned the burner on high, set a timer for five minutes, and came to check some things on the computer. The sight that greeted me in five minutes was kind of horrifying. I must tell you that I didn’t smell or hear *anything* during those five minutes. The only reason I got up from my chair was the dinging of the timer.

As I entered the kitchen I saw about 10-12 inch flames shooting from the stove. I had turned on the wrong burner! The one that had the cooling shortbread on it! The kitchen was filled with billowing smoke and my beloved shortbread pan was cracking into pieces before my very eyes. I quickly doused the fire, and opened up the house to start getting the smoke out. When I finally got to Publix I ended up spending $35 on Vanilla Febreeze candles, but the house still has a faint tinge of smoke to it.

Oh and you were wondering about the shortbread?

shortbread-of-doom

And yes, this seems to be a trend. The prosecution presents exhibit A : the panbowl, and exhibit B: the pie made of fail.

Back on the chain gang…

Got up this morning to see the man off to work and actually stuck to my plan. I had planned to get the boys in the van with their bikes and head over to Memorial Park to get some walking in. And I did it! Was I tired? Am I sweaty? Am I ready to go back to bed now? Yes, yes, and yes. But it’s done. There is something very rewarding about getting exercise done first thing. Because then the rest of the day is the great wide open…

It looks like I will be showering and then the boys and I will head over to Chamblin‘s. If you’re local, you know what it is. If not… well suffice to say it is the greatest used bookstore ever. If you click through the link you can see a picture of one of the aisles. And there are hundreds of aisles just like it. The boys trade in their old books for credit and buy new (to them) books. Don’t get me wrong, I love the library, but there is something special about a book being yours.

In other news, I updated the shop yesterday with some 100% wool sock yarn. This yarn *will* felt, but it’s a sturdy 2-ply and as long as you hand-wash it, you’ll get some really beautiful socks out of it. It’s the same base yarn that I’ve used for my Wormy, Lanyard, and Beachcomber socks. So here’s what’s new in the shop:

The boys had their last day of school yesterday. They had Mass, and then awards. Both of my boys got honor roll for the quarter, and A/B honor roll for the entire year. Here they are getting their pictures taken for the yearbook. My 3rd grader is the top left guy with the dark wavy hair. (Where did he get wavy hair? Mine is as straight as can be!)

My fourth grader is the light-haired boy in the back row. Yeah, he actually favors my sister more than me. She has that odd not brown/not blond hair.

We had a very busy week, so I just now got around to tackling the laundry. I opened the laundry closet to this. You can hardly see it, but there is a hamper under all that mess. It’s made of dark wicker. Normally that hamper gets full, I do three loads of laundry and I’m done. I’ve *never* seen it this bad. Horrible.

So this is what I’ll be doing all day. That and preparing some last minute design submissions. Have a happy Saturday.

It seemed like a good idea at the time…

Famous last words aren’t they? Why, oh why does the city of Jacksonville schedule the majority of their fun events when it is hotter than Hades? Today I visited the World of Nations (lovely festival btw) and seriously thought I was gonna pass out. The heat and the people and the sun beating down on me… oy with the poodles already. I mean it was ridiculous. And of course the water racket – your only option was Dasani at $3 a bottle so it was $12 everytime we needed to hydrate the family. Ridiculous I tell you.

It was a busy weekend. Lots of fun, but lots of running. We started Friday with a concert for the big dude at the Landing. Again with the outdoor events in the no-shade, back-breaking heat. But he had a good time – here he is taking a bow after the concert (he’s the trumpet player with the white polo and long pants):

And then on Saturday I spent the day with Sugarbee and the boys hit up the local comic book stores for free comic book day!

And I finished up the weekend by listing a few yarns on etsy. One of these days I will be able to take better photographs. These colors turned out lovely and true but I still have that fragging turquoise that I cannot for the life of me capture in photo. Anyone want a skein of Turquoise Semi-Precious sight unseen? I’ll cut you a great deal!
