Good Intentions

I’ve been trying to post more regularly, but sometimes, well sometimes good intentions are all you got. So what have I been doing instead? Well I’ve been sketching up designs and writing patterns like whoa. But of course I can’t post any pictures. I built a swift/skein-winder. Yes, yes I did. I used this tutorial. Just a word to the wise – this is NOT a $10 project. Not at all. I bought all of my supplies at home depot (just like the tute author) and it came to well over $30. And that’s not including the $13 I spent on a pvc cutter. And it looks like this:

And I finally started getting together some of the stuff to put in my etsy shop. Like this:

And this:

The superwash really took the colors and just made them sing. I’m so pleased with it! In other news I am dreaming of vacation. We’re going up north, and the weather is looking to be sunny and seventy degrees. 70 degrees? That’s like winter. I’m so excited I can’t see straight.

Whirring Brain

It’s been a busy weekend. Friday included a get-together with some of the man’s old high school friends, which was quite fun, and kept us up until the wee small hours of the morning. The boys – who had come along – were quite excited to see 1 AM.

Saturday I taught a beginner’s class at A Stitch In Time – where I now work on Wednesdays – come see me! All of the students were super fun, and I seemed to blessed lately with folks who just get it. Everyone was doing fabulous when they walked out. After that I spent a very long time with my behind planted on one of Sugarbee’s couches, just knitting and hanging out with my good knitting friends – until 2am! I think I’m too old for these late nights though, because I am seriously considering an afternoon nap – when I really need to be hitting the grocery store.

In other news, my boys are getting insanely excited about the trip up north to the cabin and I’ve been trying out some new dyeing bases and some old favorites. I leave you with a small batch of results:

Experimental Elemental

I dyed two skeins of yarn last night. Trying a new merino/nylon base that has alpaca blended in. It’s super soft undyed, and I’m very interested to see how it feels when it is dry. The alpaca will make for warm socks (for someone who doesn’t live in the sub-tropics) and it gives the yarn a lovely halo. Here’s what I’ve done so far…

These are still a bit damp, so they may lighten up some, but I love the richness of the colors. Just lovely. I have some semi-precious silk/merino going right now, and I have superwash merino roving soaking for the next go-round. I’m still trying to decide what sort of theme/scheme to go with color-wise on the superwash merino roving. I was thinking of continuing the retro candy theme, but I’m not sure. I was actually thinking of doing a mini-line of stuff that was based on my friends. Colors that I associate with them and all of that. Too many ideas, but the right one hasn’t clicked yet. Oh well. At least I get to experiment!

I received a new yarn base today also from the UK. It’s a superwash merino/nylon blend that seems pretty tightly spun. It reminds me of Opal or Trekking. I’m interested to see how it takes dye. So many factors to consider, so much fun to be had.

Doing the group thing

I’ve finally started a group on Ravelry. I decided it was the perfect place to host chatter, post shop updates, and put out calls for test and sample knitters. So please, come and join us!

It’s a good place to keep in the know, and if some of my crazy fun friends join up, it will be a fun place to hang out as well!

Sunday Dad-day

So I spent a few hard-working hours cleaning and reorganizing the office/yarn room. Found lots of yarn that I forgot I had. So now I have a nice long list of design ideas for said yarn. It also gave me some closure on some things. Sometimes it’s very, very good to just be able to move on, guilt-free and do what you want.

It’s been a good father’s day. This post was originally titled Sunday Dye-day, but the plans changed. We had a leisurely breakfast of bagels, leftover pizza for lunch, and the boys had headed over to the pool around 4:45 as I was gearing up to start dinner. I had dyed the first batch of the day and was looking forward to a peaceful evening at home.

When suddenly no more than two minutes after they left, they arrived right back home. Seems the pool decided to close early today. And boys who think they are going swimming were looking mighty disappointed – including the big man. So we moved to plan B – B for beach. I threw on my suit, some board shorts and a sundress overtop and we were off!

It was so danged hot today – I think it easily topped 100 *before* the heat index. But once we got to the beach, it was quite a bit cooler of course. We played and swimmed and had the best afternoon. The waves were super gentle and the water was pretty warm. Perfect.

After the beach we hit Cruisers for burgers (for the men), a nummy half-a-big salad for me, and some of their delicious fries with ranch dressing. Again with the perfect. No more dyeing got done today, but it was worth it. Speaking of dyeing, here’s what I’m working on now in some of my hand-dyed yarn. It’s the semi-precious silk/merino blend in amethyst, and the pattern is one of my own creation. The stitch pattern is a modification of something from the Walker books (naturally) and I’m really in love with it.

amethyst-sock

But whatever shall I call it? It needs a name, this lovely sock. And so we be having a contest. (We being me, myself, and I.) I need a name. Presumably you think the sock is pretty. You give me a name that I think is just perfect. I give you a free copy of this sock pattern (when it’s finished) and any other two patterns in my catalog. The contest will be open until Friday. Oh and I’ll help you out a little bit. I don’t like names that have colors in them. Chances are most people who make this sock won’t make it in the exact same yarn, so I like to give color-neutral names. Please give your suggestions/entries in the comments. Have at it!

Back on the chain gang…

Got up this morning to see the man off to work and actually stuck to my plan. I had planned to get the boys in the van with their bikes and head over to Memorial Park to get some walking in. And I did it! Was I tired? Am I sweaty? Am I ready to go back to bed now? Yes, yes, and yes. But it’s done. There is something very rewarding about getting exercise done first thing. Because then the rest of the day is the great wide open…

It looks like I will be showering and then the boys and I will head over to Chamblin‘s. If you’re local, you know what it is. If not… well suffice to say it is the greatest used bookstore ever. If you click through the link you can see a picture of one of the aisles. And there are hundreds of aisles just like it. The boys trade in their old books for credit and buy new (to them) books. Don’t get me wrong, I love the library, but there is something special about a book being yours.

In other news, I updated the shop yesterday with some 100% wool sock yarn. This yarn *will* felt, but it’s a sturdy 2-ply and as long as you hand-wash it, you’ll get some really beautiful socks out of it. It’s the same base yarn that I’ve used for my Wormy, Lanyard, and Beachcomber socks. So here’s what’s new in the shop:

Pure Wool Snack Collage

Buckeyes are beautiful

I’ve been experimenting with artsy photographs of stuff. Today it was food, buckeyes to be specific. Chocolate-peanut-butter perfection.

I’ve also been experimenting in the dyepot. And in the food vein, I present the Retro Candy yarns: Candy Corn, Strawberry Pop Rocks, Nerds, Cotton Candy, Cherryheads, and Bubble Gum Cigar.

More experiments later. After I catch up on some much needed sleep.

I am not a control freak

Nevermind the fact that my initials are C.F. I am not. My home is a warm and happy jumble. There are very few things that I require to be just so. As long as I can find the coriander, I don’t really care how the spices are arranged.

But I think I’m becoming a control freak with my dyeing. Before I dye yarn I put together a lot of information. 1. What line? 2. What colors? 3. What name? 4. What precise measurements of dyestock will I need for those colors? 5. What is my backup overdye plan and name should something not go right? 6. What order shall the colors be applied in? And so on, and so on, and so on…

It’s not really pretty, not my best personality trait. Last night I had some presoaked yarn in the dyepot. I pulled out five colors that would go together and I just applied everything randomly. This is what I got.

It’s scaring the beejeebers out of me. It’s a different base yarn than I usually use. I have no idea what line to put it in – other than the snackyarn line, which is for my one-offs and experimentals. I have no name. It’s pretty, so thank goodness it won’t have to be over-dyed. But all I can do is look at it and wonder, “what the heck was I thinking?”

hodge-podge

But it will be ok. Chris promises that it will be. She swears that most of the things that you dye willy nilly come out beautiful regardless and the rest can be overdyed. I’m *really* trying to believe her. I have 4 dyepots of belief simmering right now. Wish me luck and whatever it is I need to be less rigid about these things.

Shhh….

Seriously. All this secret knitting is just killing my blog. Killing it I tell you. I feel the urge to take artsy texture shots of the projects in question just so that I can show you something – anything. But alas, it would not be wise.

Yesterday we did a yarny roadtrip. I drove in the new van, and took Kim, Kristin, and Chris along for the ride. We had a fabulous time. We visited Yarnworks in Gainesville and then we headed over to Hanks, which I love and adore. It is so nice to go to Hanks and be welcomed in with warm smiles and big hugs. It honestly just makes my day. While we there I got some more Haldesoap…

DSC06231

And then I purchased two skeins of possibility. What you say, it looks like malabrigo lace to you? Nah. I mean yes. But it’s possibility to me. I’m gonna dye it up and see how it takes the dye. And then we may shoot for a new line of laceweight. Might be the start of something big.

DSC06232

After our yarny adventures we had lunch next door to Hanks at Leonardo’s where we had various entrees and the famous garlic rolls. These garlic rolls are made of love and butter and oh my goodness. If you’re ever in Gainesville you must go and have some.

In other news on Friday I went and got all my hair chopped off. No really. I went in and she asked what we were doing and I told her to chop it all off. I had enough to donate to locks of love and still have a nice length bob out of it. Plus she colored it for me in this rich dark color that I didn’t think I could pull off, but everyone says I can. So yay for good hairdressers. (Um, I would show you a picture but I need to find someone who can make look human and not like a zombie or a monkey. I don’t think I look like either of those in real life, but if I do… well I don’t want to know about it!)

Up and down…

It’s been a busy week. Lots of friends to visit, lots of housework to do, lots, lots, lots. I’ve been designing like crazy and dyeing yarn and I’m beat. It’s just been one of those weeks. And to add some interest to the week, Thursday night Rufus escaped.

I had just arrived home from a quick grocery trip and was opening up the back of the van when I hear the man yelling. And then the dog comes busting through the fence, gives me a sideways glance and takes off down the street. I’m in flip flops so I start to run after him, dropping my purse (and my cell phone) in the driveway. And we run. And we run. And we run. It was not pretty. My shins *still* hurt. Then we come up on a nice family and I yell to him,  “He’s harmless!” He goes right to them and then he runs away again. I pass the family and they yell out, “Sorry! We couldn’t catch him, he has no collar on!”. And at this point I’m ready to drop. “He has no collar on!?!?!?!?” So I keep running.

Eventually (about 10 blocks later) I catch the devil. I hold all of his neck scruff in both of my hands. The scary part of this is I was hoping for my husband to show up and rescue me, but no sight of him. So I wait a bit, but Rufus is trying to escape. So I pick up my 35 pound beagle and start to walk. Every block I put him down, holding him, and try to catch my breath. 6 blocks later, I’m done. I drop down on the ground I hold his neck in both hands and I try to not die.

About ten minutes later the man shows up. The boy collars the dog and hauls him into the van. The man pulls me off the ground. Miraculously the dog still lives with us. I’ve never been so mad at the dog in all my life. Of course it’s not the dog’s fault – doggy nature, beagles follow their nose and all that rot. But holy hannah. Is the dog trying to kill me?

I dyed this week as well. I got a shout out as  Etsy Shop of the Day on Lime & Violet’s Daily Chum. Which was awesome and surprising and emptied my shop pretty darn fast. So I dyed up 8 skeins of semi-precious this week and 3 have already sold. And I was really stoked that I dyed up all 8 skeins in one day. But of course then I read that Miss Violet herself used to have a process where she could dye up 200 per day and now she’s invented a process where she can five times that much. Yep, I’m humbled. But still excited. My business is little but growing. And I may never do 200 skeins in a week, but I can still make things happen.
